Suspect killed after shooting at Secret Service agent outside White House

United States: A suspect has been shot and killed by US Secret Service agents after the man pulled a gun from his bag and opened fire on agents near a White House security checkpoint, according to BBC, CNN, CBS News, Reuters and other sources.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 23, 2026 (US time) at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, which connects the U.S. Capitol and the White House in Washington, DC.

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who has a history of attempting to illegally enter the White House twice in 2025 and is a person with mental health issues.

Local reports said that after the suspect opened fire, Secret Service agents immediately returned fire, seriously wounding the suspect and later succumbing to his injuries at the hospital. No Secret Service agents were injured, but a passerby was injured in the shooting and remains hospitalized.

The shooting occurred while President Donald Trump was inside the White House, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries. However, the White House was briefly placed on lockdown for about 40 minutes before the situation was brought under control.

Currently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), along with local police, are working together to further investigate the cause and motivation of the suspect behind the attack.
