Winner of California Governor’s Race Announced

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in California’s November gubernatorial election, guaranteeing that Democrats will remain represented in the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom.

CNN projected that Becerra advanced after building a decisive lead over several rivals competing for one of the top two positions in California’s primary system. His success eased concerns among Democrats that a crowded field could split the vote and potentially allow two Republicans to advance to the general election.

Following the projection, Becerra thanked supporters and expressed optimism about the next phase of the campaign. He said he was honored to move forward and looked forward to competing for the governorship in November.

The race for the second general-election spot remains too close to call. Republican candidate Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host backed by President Donald Trump, continues to compete with billionaire Democratic activist Tom Steyer for the remaining position on the ballot.

California’s political environment strongly favors Democrats, who maintain a significant voter registration advantage statewide. The last Republican governor elected in California was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who won reelection more than two decades ago.

Becerra’s campaign focused heavily on his experience as a former congressman, California attorney general, and cabinet secretary. He argued that California’s challenges require experienced leadership and a proven ability to manage complex issues.

Critics, however, questioned parts of his record, including his handling of migrant and public health issues during his time in federal government. He also faced scrutiny after a former chief of staff pleaded guilty to campaign-related fraud charges, although Becerra was not accused of any wrongdoing.

With his place in the general election secured, Becerra now turns his attention to the November contest. Regardless of whether Hilton or Steyer ultimately claims the second spot, the former cabinet secretary will be one of the two candidates competing to become California’s next governor.
