The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, widely known as Washington’s “nerd prom,” took a dramatic and unexpected turn on Saturday evening when a major security incident forced the cancellation of the high-profile event.
The gathering, which traditionally brings together journalists, political leaders, celebrities, and influential figures for an evening of speeches and satire, was just getting underway when chaos erupted. What began as a celebration of the Washington press corps quickly transformed into a scene of confusion and concern as security personnel responded to a serious threat.
According to law enforcement officials, suspect Cole Allen was apprehended in the hotel lobby after being subdued by Secret Service agents. Reports indicated that Allen was armed with a shotgun and several knives and allegedly attempted to force his way through a security checkpoint in an effort to reach the area where President Donald Trump was present.
Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that investigators believe Allen acted alone and that there was no indication of a wider threat to the public. Authorities also suggested that the suspect was a guest staying at the hotel.
During the confrontation, a Secret Service agent was shot at close range. President Trump later revealed that the agent survived because a bulletproof vest absorbed the impact of the powerful gunfire. He praised the swift actions of law enforcement officers and Secret Service personnel, saying their rapid response prevented the situation from becoming even more dangerous.
Following the incident, Trump described the suspect as a “sick person” and confirmed that investigators were searching the man’s residence in California. The president also reflected on the atmosphere inside the venue, saying the crisis unexpectedly brought together journalists and politicians from different backgrounds in a display of unity and resilience.
Although organizers initially considered continuing the program, the event was officially canceled later that evening. The incident has prompted a review of security measures at major political gatherings in Washington, D.C.
