Illinois Officials Warn of Possible Measles Exposure at Chicago O’Hare Airport
Illinois health officials have issued a public health alert after confirming that a person infected with measles traveled through Chicago O’Hare International Airport, raising concerns about possible exposure among passengers, employees, and visitors at one of the nation’s busiest transportation centers.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said the infected individual was inside Terminal 1 at O’Hare on April 22 and April 23, spending several hours at the airport each day. Because thousands of people pass through O’Hare daily, officials have begun contact tracing efforts to identify individuals who may have been exposed.
Health experts emphasized that measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can remain suspended in enclosed spaces for up to two hours, meaning people may become infected even without direct contact with the person carrying the virus.
Officials said the traveler had received one dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine but later developed symptoms. The illness began with fever, cough, and fatigue before progressing to the characteristic measles rash. Laboratory testing later confirmed the infection, and the individual is currently isolating at home.
Authorities are urging anyone who was in Terminal 1 during the exposure period to monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days. Early signs include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash that often begins on the face and spreads throughout the body.
A second measles case has also been reported in the same Illinois county, though investigators have not yet determined whether the cases are connected.
Public health officials are reminding residents that vaccination remains the strongest protection against measles. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection and help prevent outbreaks, especially among vulnerable populations such as infants and people with weakened immune systems.
Officials continue to work with airport authorities, healthcare providers, and local agencies to monitor the situation, identify possible exposures, and prevent further spread of the virus.
