Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has officially retired from her teaching career, concluding more than 40 years of service as an educator and bringing to a close a profession she has long described as the defining work of her life.
Dr. Biden announced her retirement during a virtual appreciation event for educators held in December 2024. She revealed that she had taught her final English and writing course at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), where she had served as a faculty member since 2009.
Her retirement marks the end of a historic chapter in American public life. While serving as both Second Lady and later First Lady, Dr. Biden became the first spouse of a sitting U.S. president to maintain a full-time teaching career outside the White House. Before joining NOVA, she taught in public high schools and community colleges in Delaware and Virginia, building a career focused on expanding educational opportunity.
Throughout her time in education, Dr. Biden was a strong advocate for community colleges, frequently highlighting their role in providing affordable, accessible education for first-generation college students, working adults, military veterans, and others seeking new opportunities. She often emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and the ability of education to transform lives and strengthen local communities.
“Teaching is the work of my life,” Dr. Biden has said on numerous occasions, reflecting her enduring commitment to the classroom despite the responsibilities that accompanied her family’s public service. Colleagues and supporters have praised her dedication to students and her efforts to elevate the national conversation about higher education.
Although she has retired from formal classroom instruction, Dr. Biden is expected to remain engaged in educational advocacy and public service. Her legacy extends beyond the thousands of students she taught directly to the broader impact she has had in promoting community colleges, educational equity, and student-centered learning.
As she begins this new chapter, Dr. Biden leaves behind a distinguished career that has inspired educators, students, and lifelong learners across the United States.
