The political community was stunned early Sunday after news broke that South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham had died following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. The announcement, released shortly after his passing, stated that Graham died on the evening of Saturday, July 11. His family expressed gratitude for the public’s prayers and requested privacy as they mourned their loss.
Within a day, officials released preliminary medical findings regarding the longtime senator’s death. According to the District of Columbia medical examiner, Graham’s apparent cause of death was an aortic dissection resulting from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. An aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition in which the inner layer of the aorta, the body’s largest artery, tears and allows blood to flow between the vessel’s layers.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing. The death certificate will remain pending until toxicology and microscopic examinations are completed, after which the official cause and manner of death will be finalized. Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll and Chief Medical Examiner Francisco J. Diaz noted that these additional tests are standard procedure whenever an autopsy is performed in the District of Columbia.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence Saturday evening after receiving a report of chest pains. The senator had returned from Ukraine the previous day, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss continued U.S. support for Ukraine’s defense.
President Donald Trump paid tribute to Graham on Truth Social, describing him as a dedicated public servant and longtime friend. Trump also revealed that the two spoke by phone on Saturday evening, discussing the SAVE America Act. Although Graham reportedly mentioned feeling tired after his overseas trip, Trump said he remained optimistic about the legislation and sounded determined to continue his work in the Senate.
