President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump experienced a brief travel disruption during their visit to the United Kingdom after Marine One made a precautionary emergency landing because of a mechanical issue.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the helicopter developed a hydraulic problem while traveling from the prime minister’s Chequers estate to Stansted Airport. As a safety measure, the pilots landed at a nearby airfield before completing the trip.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport,” Leavitt told reporters. “The president and first lady safely boarded the support helicopter.”
The flight was originally expected to take about 20 minutes but lasted nearly 40 minutes after the transfer to the backup aircraft. No injuries were reported, and the president’s schedule continued with only a brief delay.
The incident came during Trump’s second state visit to the United Kingdom, where he met with King Charles III and Queen Camilla before holding talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The discussions focused on strengthening economic ties, expanding technology cooperation, and increasing investment between the two nations.
Starmer praised a proposed £250 billion U.S.-UK mutual investment package, describing the partnership as one of the world’s strongest economic alliances. Trump said the agreement would create billions of dollars in new opportunities while improving American access to Britain’s globally recognized aerospace industry.
The leaders also announced a new science and technology partnership aimed at advancing artificial intelligence, quantum computing, fusion energy, 6G communications, and civil nuclear power. Trump said the agreement would encourage greater cooperation among governments, universities, and private companies while promoting innovation through deregulation.
Among the largest private-sector commitments highlighted during the visit was a reported $136 billion investment from Blackstone. Trump also pointed to a partnership between American nuclear company X-energy and British energy firm Centrica to deploy small modular nuclear reactors across the UK. According to the president, the project could generate more than $50 billion in economic value, create up to 2,500 jobs, and provide enough electricity to power approximately 1.5 million homes.
Following the successful conclusion of his meetings in Britain, President Trump returned to the White House on Friday after completing his overseas trip.
