McConnell Remains Hospitalized After June Fall, Sparking GOP Concerns
Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is still recovering in a rehabilitation facility following a fall last month, as senior GOP colleagues express growing unease over the lack of detailed updates on the 84-year-old lawmaker’s condition.
McConnell fell on June 14 and was briefly unconscious, leading to hospitalization. During recovery, he was diagnosed with a mild case of pneumonia. His office stated he did not suffer a heart attack, stroke, or broken bones, and emphasized that he is making continued progress in rehabilitation. A photo released Sunday showed McConnell sitting upright in his hospital bed alongside his wife, Elaine Chao.
Several top Republicans voiced frustration Tuesday over the limited information shared by Senate leadership. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville called for greater transparency, telling Fox News Digital, “Somebody needs to do something. Somebody needs to come out.” Tuberville noted that no additional timeline or health details were provided during a recent Senate luncheon, adding, “I don’t know what’s going on.”
In contrast, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy defended McConnell and pushed back against online rumors suggesting a more serious condition. “Look, I believe Mitch,” Kennedy said. “People need to get a life.” He attributed the incident to McConnell’s age and history of childhood polio, saying, “I think he had a fall, and Mitch is not 29 anymore. He’s recuperating from it, and he’ll be back as soon as he can.”
Despite the latest update from McConnell’s office, speculation continues. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer questioned the authenticity of the released photo after images showed Chao leaving the facility wearing a surgical mask, sunglasses, and a trench coat. McConnell has not appeared publicly since mid-June, and no firm return date has been announced.
Senate Republicans continue to monitor the situation while stressing respect for the senator’s privacy during his recuperation.
