Washington, D.C. — A juvenile was injured in an officer-involved shooting near the White House Wednesday, prompting a brief lockdown of the presidential residence.
Authorities say the incident occurred at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The victim, identified only as a juvenile, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Secret Service personnel responded to a confrontation between an armed individual and Secret Service Police. The White House was placed on lockdown shortly after the shooting, which took place just minutes after the Vice President had left the area, according to Secret Service Deputy Director Mathew C. Quinn.
“The incident resulted from a confrontation between an armed individual and Secret Service Police,” a Secret Service statement said.
This latest event comes just over a week after another serious security breach at a high-profile Washington event.
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, faces federal charges for allegedly attempting to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner while armed with multiple weapons. Officials say Allen tried to reach the ballroom where President Donald J. Trump was attending alongside Cabinet officials and journalists.
In federal court, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine stated, “He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.” Prosecutors requested preventative detention for Allen.
Former prosecutor Jeanine Pirro commented at a press conference: “Cole Allen’s journey of accountability in the criminal justice system starts today. There will be additional charges as this investigation continues to unfold. This is the kind of situation that we cannot tolerate.”
The Secret Service continues to investigate both incidents as authorities work to strengthen security around key government sites and events.
