Trump and Melania Safely Continue U.K. State Visit After Helicopter Issue
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were traveling aboard Marine One in the United Kingdom when the helicopter made an unscheduled landing after pilots identified a reported hydraulic issue.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the pilots decided to land at a local airfield as a precaution before the helicopter reached London Stansted Airport. Trump and Melania then transferred to a support helicopter and continued their journey safely.
The flight was expected to take approximately 20 minutes from the prime minister’s landing zone at Chequers to Stansted Airport. The reported helicopter issue extended the journey to nearly 40 minutes.
U.S.-U.K. Investment and Cooperation
Trump’s visit marked his second state visit to the United Kingdom. King Charles III and Queen Camilla welcomed the president and first lady, with the visit featuring discussions on trade, technology, energy and investment.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted a broader £250 billion package of investment involving the United Kingdom and the United States, describing the commitments as an important development in the economic relationship between the two countries.
Trump spent part of the day at Windsor Castle with King Charles III before traveling to Chequers for meetings with Starmer and business leaders.
Technology and Business Agreements
Trump and Starmer later met with business executives at a reception at Chequers. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in technology, energy, manufacturing and investment.
Starmer described the agreement as a “tech-prosperity deal,” while Trump said it would create significant economic opportunities and expand American access to elements of the U.K. aerospace supply chain.
Trump also highlighted planned cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, fusion energy, 6G and civil nuclear power. He emphasized the growing need for electricity generation as demand from AI and other advanced technologies increases.
The British government said the broader package included major commitments involving artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, clean energy and nuclear power.
Nuclear Energy Partnership
One of the agreements highlighted during the visit involved U.S. company X-Energy and British company Centrica. The companies announced plans to develop advanced modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom.
The proposed project could involve up to 12 reactors at Hartlepool as part of a wider British program targeting a 6-gigawatt nuclear fleet. The U.K. government said the development could generate enough electricity to supply as many as 1.5 million homes and support up to 2,500 jobs.
Trump emphasized the importance of expanding energy production to support future technological growth, particularly artificial intelligence.
The U.K. government described the state visit as producing a major package of commercial commitments, including £150 billion in newly announced U.S. investment in Britain.
Return to the United States
Trump and Melania subsequently traveled to London Stansted Airport, where they boarded Air Force One for their return to the United States.
Despite the reported helicopter issue, the president and first lady continued their schedule safely, while the broader state visit focused on strengthening economic, technological and energy cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom.
