Reports of several scientists connected to U.S. aerospace, defense, and government research programs who have died or disappeared since 2022 are receiving renewed attention after Congress launched an inquiry. While investigators are examining the cases, authorities have not confirmed that they are connected.
The House Oversight Committee recently requested information from multiple federal agencies regarding at least 11 researchers with ties to organizations including NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. Committee Chairman James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison sent letters seeking briefings from the FBI, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and NASA.
In their letters, the lawmakers warned that if reports are accurate, the deaths and disappearances could pose a serious national security concern involving personnel with access to sensitive scientific information. Comer said the committee believes the number of incidents deserves careful investigation and that members are looking for possible connections rather than assuming the cases are unrelated.
The issue also drew attention at the White House. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration considers the reports worth reviewing if the claims are accurate. President Donald Trump later told reporters he had recently attended a meeting on the matter and expected additional information soon.
The FBI has confirmed it is reviewing the cases alongside other federal agencies. Director Kash Patel said investigators are examining whether any links exist involving classified information, foreign actors, or criminal activity. The bureau stated it is working with the Departments of Energy and Defense, as well as state and local law enforcement, to determine whether any common factors exist.
NASA said it is cooperating with the investigation but noted that it currently has no evidence indicating a national security threat connected to the agency.
Congressional investigators are also reviewing possible links involving commercial space companies and advanced research programs. Some experts note that highly specialized fields such as planetary defense and nuclear research involve relatively small groups of scientists, making any unusual pattern of deaths or disappearances worthy of careful examination. However, officials emphasize that no evidence has yet established a coordinated cause or conspiracy.
