On the evening of April 25, 2026, a major security scare interrupted the annual White House Correspondentsā Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The prestigious event, often referred to as the āNerd Prom,ā was attended by President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior government officials, lawmakers, journalists, and celebrities when the incident unfolded.
According to authorities, the disturbance began roughly twenty minutes after the President and First Lady entered the ballroom. Investigators said a 31-year-old man identified as Cole Allen, a teacher and graduate of the California Institute of Technology from Torrance, California, attempted to breach a secured area inside the hotel. Officials reported that the suspect was armed with a shotgun and several knives.
Law enforcement officers and Secret Service agents reacted immediately after the suspect rushed toward the security perimeter. He was stopped in the hotel lobby before he could gain access to the crowded ballroom where hundreds of guests were gathered. During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. Authorities later confirmed that the agent survived because of protective body armor and was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Following the incident, security personnel quickly evacuated attendees while officers secured the hotel and searched for any additional threats. Officials later stated that investigators believe the suspect acted alone and that there was no continuing danger to the public.
Although organizers initially hoped to continue the eveningās program, the White House Correspondentsā Association later decided to cancel the dinner. President Trump later praised the actions of the Secret Service and law enforcement officers, describing their response as swift and professional during a highly dangerous situation.
