No Way to Make a Deal The agreement that Trump wants to strike with Iran keeps eluding him. By Jonathan Lemire and Nancy A. Youssef

President Donald Trump spent the holiday weekend in Washington instead of attending his eldest son’s wedding, reflecting the administration’s focus on ongoing negotiations with Iran. Expectations for a breakthrough grew after Trump said on Saturday that an agreement was “largely negotiated” and could be finalized soon.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was traveling in India, also suggested that a deal might be announced quickly. On Sunday, Rubio said an agreement could come that day, and he expressed similar optimism again on Monday. However, as no announcement materialized, he later acknowledged that negotiations might require several more days to conclude.

Speculation intensified when Trump scheduled a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, a location associated with major diplomatic achievements and Middle East peace efforts. Many observers viewed the meeting as a sign that a significant announcement was imminent.

Those expectations faded when bad weather forced the gathering to be moved back to the White House. During the meeting, Trump indicated that negotiations were still ongoing and that no final agreement had been reached.

“They want very much to make a deal,” Trump said of Iran. “So far, they haven’t gotten there.”

His comments highlighted both the progress made in the talks and the remaining obstacles that negotiators must overcome before any agreement can be finalized.
