Trump Signs Order Expediting Drugs for Mental Health Treatment

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday aimed at accelerating the development and approval of certain psychedelic-based treatments, particularly for veterans suffering from mental health conditions. According to Trump, the order directs the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to speed up its review of psychedelic therapies that have already received “breakthrough therapy” designation.

Speaking about the initiative, Trump described it as a significant step toward expanding access to innovative medical treatments. He said the order would help remove bureaucratic barriers, improve coordination and data sharing between the FDA and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and create a faster process for rescheduling psychedelic substances that gain FDA approval.

The president emphasized the potential benefits of these therapies for individuals dealing with severe depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injuries, and other mental health challenges. He pointed to research conducted at Stanford University in 2024 involving special operations veterans who received ibogaine treatment. According to Trump, participants reported substantial reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety within a month of treatment.

Trump also announced a new federal investment of $50 million to support ibogaine research, matching a similar commitment already made by leaders in Texas. In addition, he said the administration would establish a pathway for certain critically ill patients to access ibogaine treatment under existing “Right to Try” laws.

The president stated that the goal of the order is to provide new opportunities for people struggling with debilitating conditions, especially veterans, and to help them regain a better quality of life.
