Harris, 61, announced last year that she would not enter the race for governor of California, a decision that immediately fueled speculation about her long-term ambitions. At the time, political observers viewed her options as including a gubernatorial campaign, another presidential bid, or a departure from elected politics following her defeat to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
When podcast host and author Sharon McMahon asked if she planned to run again, Harris responded that she had not yet made a decision. Pressed further on whether she was still thinking about it, Harris replied that she might pursue another campaign, leaving the door open to a future bid.
Current polling suggests Harris remains one of the most prominent figures in the Democratic Party. In a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary field, she and California Governor Gavin Newsom are among the leading contenders. Harris currently holds a slight advantage in polling averages, reflecting her continued influence among Democratic voters despite her loss in 2024.
During the interview, McMahon suggested that Harris’s recently published memoir, “107 Days,” gave the impression that she was interested in another presidential campaign. Harris disagreed, explaining that the book was intended to document a unique period of her life rather than serve as a political statement or campaign preview. She said her goal was to share the realities of the experience and inspire readers, particularly young people, to believe in their own potential.
At the same time, Harris has expanded her public engagement through a new digital initiative aimed at younger voters. Her former campaign social media accounts have been rebranded as “Headquarters,” a youth-focused organization created in partnership with People For the American Way. The project seeks to encourage civic participation and promote democratic values among younger generations.
Harris serves as the organization’s chair emerita and has expressed enthusiasm about its mission. Through online content and outreach efforts, Headquarters plans to connect young Americans with elected officials, community leaders, activists, and advocates. While Harris has yet to decide whether she will seek the presidency again, her continued public presence and political activity ensure that she remains a significant figure in discussions about the Democratic Party’s future.
