đź’”Leading Dem Endorses Senate Candidate Platner As Controversies Grow

Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democratic congressman from California, is drawing criticism after publicly supporting Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner despite ongoing controversy surrounding the candidate’s past conduct and statements.

Platner, a Democrat running in a key Senate race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins, has faced a series of allegations and controversies in recent weeks. These include resurfaced social media posts described as inflammatory, questions about a tattoo he has acknowledged could be interpreted as resembling a Nazi symbol, and accusations from former partners involving volatile behavior, heavy alcohol use, and inappropriate relationship dynamics. Platner has rejected wrongdoing, arguing that the claims are politically motivated and that he has changed since a difficult period in his life following military service in Iraq.

Khanna appeared with Platner at a campaign event and defended him in media interviews. While acknowledging concerns about misogyny and unhealthy relationships, Khanna emphasized the idea of personal growth and accountability. He said Platner had expressed regret over his past and described him as someone who had taken responsibility and worked to improve himself. Khanna also argued more broadly that individuals should be allowed redemption if they demonstrate change.

The congressman’s stance has sparked debate because of his earlier public statements during the Supreme Court confirmation fight over Brett Kavanaugh, when he strongly supported Christine Blasey Ford and questioned Kavanaugh’s suitability for the court. Critics now argue that Khanna is applying inconsistent standards when evaluating allegations, depending on political context and party alignment. Supporters counter that his position reflects a belief in rehabilitation and a focus on broader policy priorities, including economic reform and taxing wealthy individuals.

The controversy has become part of a closely watched Senate contest in Maine, where Democrats see an opportunity to challenge Susan Collins in a narrowly divided Senate. Platner continues to campaign while facing sustained scrutiny, and Khanna has expressed confidence that he will ultimately secure the Democratic nomination despite the ongoing political backlash.
