BREAKING: Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) has introduced new legislation titled the “Somalia Immigration Moratorium Act,” a proposal that would suspend all immigration from Somalia to the United States for the next 25 years. The bill would block both immigrant and temporary non-immigrant visas for Somali nationals, making it one of the most restrictive immigration measures introduced in recent years.
According to Gill and the bill’s Republican supporters, the legislation is aimed at addressing concerns involving national security, public assistance costs, immigration fraud, and challenges related to assimilation. Supporters argue that weaknesses in Somalia’s government and identification systems make reliable background screening difficult and could create long-term security risks for the United States.
The proposal also points to past fraud investigations involving Somali-linked organizations in the U.S. as justification for stricter immigration controls. Several Republican lawmakers have already signed on as cosponsors, helping move the bill into the committee review stage in the House of Representatives.
Critics, however, argue the measure unfairly targets an entire nationality and could face serious legal and constitutional challenges if it advances further in Congress. Immigration advocates have also warned the proposal could negatively impact families, refugees, and individuals seeking humanitarian protection.
