White House Correspondents’ Dinner Canceled After Armed Security Incident at Washington Hilton

The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, one of Washington’s highest-profile political and media events, was abruptly canceled Saturday night after an armed individual was apprehended outside the ballroom where President Donald Trump and hundreds of guests had gathered.

The incident unfolded as the traditional gala—often referred to as Washington’s “nerd prom”—was beginning, transforming an evening of political satire and journalism into a tense security emergency.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect, identified as Cole Allen, was stopped by members of the U.S. Secret Service after allegedly charging toward a security checkpoint while carrying a shotgun and multiple knives. Photographs released after the incident showed Allen restrained on the hotel lobby floor as officers took him into custody.

Authorities said investigators believe the suspect acted alone. Interim Washington, D.C., Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that there was no indication of a broader threat to the public following Allen’s arrest, adding that he appeared to have been a guest at the Washington Hilton.

During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. President Trump later said the agent survived because a bullet-resistant vest prevented life-threatening injuries.

“The officers did a fantastic job,” Trump said afterward. “They acted very quickly.”

Speaking during a later briefing, the president described Allen as “a sick person” and confirmed that investigators had begun searching the suspect’s California residence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Trump also reflected on the atmosphere inside the venue during the evacuation, saying the emergency unexpectedly brought together journalists, elected officials, and guests from across the political spectrum.

He described the gathering—an event traditionally centered on the importance of a free press and the First Amendment—as displaying a rare sense of unity during the crisis.

“Everyone came together,” Trump said, calling the response “very beautiful” despite the frightening circumstances.

Although organizers initially hoped to continue the evening’s program after the threat had been contained, they ultimately canceled the event at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Trump said he had wanted the dinner to proceed and was prepared to deliver remarks that included criticism of the press corps. However, organizers decided that canceling the event was the safest course of action, with plans to reschedule the dinner within the following 30 days.

The incident has prompted an immediate review of security procedures surrounding major political events in the nation’s capital. Officials continue to investigate the suspect’s motive and whether additional security measures will be implemented for future high-profile gatherings.

No guests attending the dinner were reported injured, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat related to the incident.
