Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that diplomatic contacts aimed at reducing tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran have made limited progress, but he stressed that negotiations remain in a fragile stage with no guarantee of a breakthrough.
Speaking with reporters, Rubio characterized the recent developments as cautiously positive, saying there has been some movement in indirect discussions involving Washington and Tehran. However, he urged observers not to assume that a comprehensive agreement is imminent, noting that substantial differences between the parties still need to be resolved.
Diplomatic reports indicate that Pakistan has continued to play a facilitating role by helping maintain communication channels between U.S. and Iranian officials. Pakistan’s military chief, Syed Asim Munir, is expected to meet with Iranian leaders as part of broader regional consultations intended to encourage dialogue and reduce the risk of further escalation.
Rubio also reaffirmed the U.S. position regarding the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting any proposal that would allow Iran to impose fees, restrictions, or authorization requirements on commercial vessels using the strategically important waterway. He said such actions would conflict with international maritime law, disrupt global trade, and create additional obstacles to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil exports. Any interruption to maritime traffic through the passage could have serious consequences for international energy markets and the global economy. Rubio warned that if Iran pursues policies that hinder freedom of navigation, the United States and its partners could be forced to evaluate additional diplomatic or economic responses.
Elsewhere in the region, clashes involving Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah have continued despite earlier ceasefire initiatives. At the same time, the European Union announced plans to broaden sanctions against individuals and organizations linked to efforts that disrupt commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Fox News anchor Bret Baier also reported that President Donald Trump expressed measured optimism that negotiations with Iran could produce an agreement within the coming week, while acknowledging that significant uncertainty still surrounds the diplomatic process.
