White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced today that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a common vascular condition affecting blood flow in the legs.
The diagnosis follows a thorough medical evaluation prompted by observed swelling in the president’s lower extremities. Leavitt made the announcement to address public speculation fueled by recent images and videos circulating on social media.
What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the leg veins weaken or become damaged, impairing their ability to return blood efficiently to the heart. This leads to blood pooling in the lower legs, often causing swelling (edema), a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, or achiness.
Medical teams performed bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds, which confirmed the CVI diagnosis. Additional testing, including an echocardiogram and comprehensive lab work, ruled out more serious issues such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, heart failure, renal impairment, or other systemic concerns. All results were within normal limits.
The Medical Assessment
Physicians emphasized that President Trump remains in excellent overall health despite the condition, which is described as benign and particularly common in adults over 70. Trump turned 79 in June.
Leavitt described the evaluation as a proactive step taken out of an abundance of caution after the president himself noted mild swelling in recent weeks. She stressed that the president is not experiencing discomfort related to the condition and continues his full schedule without issue.
In the same briefing, Leavitt also addressed visible bruising on the president’s hand, attributing it to minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and his regular use of aspirin as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.
Outlook and Management
CVI is a manageable condition. Standard approaches often include lifestyle measures such as leg elevation, compression stockings, regular movement, and in some cases, medical procedures if symptoms progress. The White House has not indicated any immediate changes to the president’s duties.
This update underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency regarding the president’s health amid ongoing public interest. President Trump continues to fulfill his responsibilities at the highest level.
