Federal authorities have reportedly arrested at least five people in connection with alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, according to White House Deputy Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Speaking during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Leavitt said authorities have filed 14 police reports related to the incidents as investigators continue examining the damage.
The Reflecting Pool, which underwent a $14.8 million restoration project, has recently faced algae problems and reported acts of vandalism. Although currently on maternity leave following the birth of her daughter, Leavitt addressed the controversy, calling the situation “completely ridiculous” and criticizing demonstrators who gathered near the memorial wearing algae-themed costumes and carrying “Team Algae” signs. She argued that President Donald Trump’s pledge to improve the appearance and safety of Washington, D.C., remains a priority for the administration.
Among those arrested was former U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn, who told NBC News he was detained for about five hours after touching what he described as a loose piece of coating that had separated from the pool’s surface.
President Trump also commented on the issue following meetings at Camp David and an aerial inspection aboard Marine One. In posts on Truth Social, he alleged that chemicals had been illegally dumped into the Reflecting Pool and claimed the structure had suffered a massive breach measuring roughly 300 to 350 feet. Trump said the damage would likely require the pool to be drained again and warned that those responsible could face severe criminal penalties, including prison sentences of up to 10 years. He added that evidence would be presented through the legal process and referred additional questions to the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior.
The restoration project has generated criticism from some Democratic lawmakers and local residents. Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan said many constituents have expressed frustration over the ongoing problems at the site. Meanwhile, demonstrations have continued at the National Mall as preparations move forward for the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.
Federal authorities say the investigation into the reported vandalism remains active, while the Trump administration has pledged to continue restoring and maintaining the historic Reflecting Pool despite the alleged interference.
