Dr. James C. Dobson, the influential psychologist, author and evangelical Christian leader, died on August 21, 2025, at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by Focus on the Family and the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute.

Over more than five decades, Dobson became one of the most recognizable voices in American evangelical Christianity. Through books, radio broadcasts and public advocacy, he addressed parenting, marriage, child development, faith and cultural issues. He authored more than 70 books, including Dare to Discipline, which helped establish his reputation as an influential voice on family life.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson trained as a psychologist before turning much of his professional attention toward strengthening families. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family, launching a radio program that eventually reached millions of listeners in the United States and internationally. The organization grew into a major Christian ministry with a broad cultural and political presence.

Dobson was also an outspoken advocate on social and religious issues. His public positions included support for traditional family structures, pro-life policies and religious liberty. Those views made him an important figure within conservative Christian circles and brought him into American political discussions over several decades.

After leaving Focus on the Family, Dobson continued his broadcasting and advocacy through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. His work remained focused on family life, Christian faith and cultural questions until his death.

Dobson’s influence extended beyond his books and broadcasts. He advised political leaders and became a prominent voice in debates involving religion, family policy and American culture. His supporters remembered him as a counselor and advocate who sought to encourage parents and strengthen families, while critics viewed his political activism as part of the broader rise of the religious right in American public life.

His legacy remains visible through the organizations, publications and broadcasts that continue to carry his name and teachings. In the months following his death, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has continued publishing his work and tributes from family members, colleagues and public figures.

Dr. James Dobson leaves behind his wife, Shirley, their two adult children and grandchildren. His decades of writing, broadcasting and advocacy made him a significant figure in American evangelical life and ensured that his influence would continue well beyond his lifetime.
