White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the Trump administration’s approach to media access during a discussion at an event hosted by Axios co-founder Mike Allen. She argued that the administration has expanded opportunities for journalists by allowing a broader range of news organizations to participate in White House coverage, rather than relying on a small group of traditional outlets.
During the conversation, Allen questioned whether recent changes to the White House press pool could affect the historical record, noting that iconic moments, including the widely circulated photograph taken after the assassination attempt against President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, were captured by an Associated Press photographer. He asked whether limiting the role of established wire services could have unintended consequences.
Leavitt responded that thousands of journalists hold White House press credentials, while only a fraction regularly cover the administration. She said it was unfair for a single news organization to have guaranteed access to the president and argued that the revised system provides greater transparency and allows more diverse media outlets to participate. According to Leavitt, the changes have increased accessibility without preventing any qualified journalists from covering the administration.
Addressing criticism from the White House Correspondents’ Association, Leavitt rejected the idea that the organization should determine which reporters receive access to the Oval Office or travel aboard Air Force One. She maintained that the administration’s goal is to create equal opportunities for a wider variety of news organizations, including digital and nontraditional media outlets.
Leavitt also contrasted President Trump’s public availability with that of former President Joe Biden, arguing that Trump has been far more accessible to reporters. She pointed to an earlier Axios report stating that, at the same stage of their presidencies, Biden had participated in significantly fewer press conferences and media interviews than recent presidents. The report noted that Biden had conducted 164 such appearances, compared with 468 by Trump during a comparable period, fueling ongoing debate over presidential media accessibility.
